Abstract (english): The article is based on a collaborative research project working on institutional constellations of risk for sexual violence in family-like contexts (Original German title: "Institutionelle Risikokonstellationen sexueller Gewalt in familialisierten pädagogischen Kontexten"). Public awareness for sexual violence in pedagogical institutions in Germany was triggered by several news reports in 2010. Among others, numerous cases in Catholic and progressive educational boarding schools were pointed out. Against the background of the broad discussion on sexual violence, we present research findings from pedagogical institutions focussing on corporeality and intimacy within pedagogical situations. The pedagogical situations under investigation were observed in an all-day school and in a residential youth care home. The public discourse on safety in pedagogical settings and the introduction of new laws demanded pedagogical institutions to position themselves regarding the risk for sexual violence. The fact that institutions are confronted with the demand for (more) safe spaces implies the general assumption that by means of particular practices these institutions are able to create them. The assumption that practices of corporeality, intimacy and emotionality constitute a safe space within institutions is the starting point of this article. Starting from observation of everyday life in these pedagogic institutions, the presented ethnographic descriptions focus on practices which constitute safe spaces. In this way, we examine to what extent the pedagogical institutions constitute safe spaces for their clients. Our findings shot that safe spaces can only be constituted alternatively or parallel to the spatial and institutional ordering. We use the Foucauldian concept of heterotopia in order to analyse and describe these safe spaces. This concept gives us the chance to specify the nature safe spaces. The concept of heterotopia answers the practical and theoretical demand for safety but also the research dilemma that sexual violence against children cannot be researched directly. Hence we observed those places that we expect to be at risk for sexual violence, i.e. spaces where physical intimacy and emotionality frequently occur, and describe how practices of intimacy and corporality constitute pedagogical relationships. We conclude that comprehensive safety is an illusion or utopia and pedagogical institutions always include spaces of risk for sexual violence. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract: Pedagogy is at the heart of teaching and learning. Preparing young people to meet new contemporary challenges means to review and update the pedagogies teachers use. However, despite the increased reporting of teachers and schools that are innovating, schools remain largely seen as very resistant places for innovation. To address the importance and challenges of implementing new pedagogies, this paper brings together leading experts to reflect on key areas of pedagogy. In particular, each chapter addresses a pedagogical dimension that together offers a conceptual framework for action. This framework moves beyond a fragmented focus on specific innovations. In doing so, it helps explain how innovative pedagogies may be developed, applied and scaled. Amelia Peterson's first contribution shows how fundamental purpose is to pedagogy, while Hanna Dumont's section explores adaptive teaching as a cross-cutting concept over a range of different pedagogical approaches. Then the paper moves to discuss the importance of understanding pedagogies as combinations, which Amelia Peterson defines as two layers: one combining discrete teaching practices and another that combines approaches to meet long-term educational goals. Marc Lafuente looks first at content domains (mathematics, non-native languages, and socio-emotional learning) and how they relate to pedagogies. He then contributes to the thinking on "new learners" and technology, as important context influencing pedagogical choices and implementation. The final section by Nancy Law is focused on change, through the particular prism of technology-enhanced pedagogical innovations. Her analysis moves towards a theory of change that takes account of the need for alignment at the different levels of the educational system. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Introduction. Multiple imputation (MI) is one of the most highly recommended methods for replacing missing values in research data. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate missing data handling in SEM by analyzing two modified data examples from educational psychology, and to give practical recommendations for applied researchers.
Method. We provide two examples (N = 589 and N = 621, respectively) based on previous studies of students' self-concepts, mastery goals and performance avoidance goals, and a 7-step tutorial. Then, we produced 20% and 40% missing data under three missing mechanisms by these complete, genuine data sets. The resulting datasets were then analyzed by (1) listwise deletion and structural equation models (SEM), (2) full information maximum likelihood (FIML) with SEM, and (3) MI combined with SEM and pooling. Thus, the results stem from 2 x 3 x 3 conditions.
Results. Previous research was replicated by illustrating a practical way to combine MI with SEM and pooling. The assumed factor structure was depicted in both examples with multiply imputed values applied.
Discussion. We suggest adding variables to clarify the missing data mechanism, especially for dependent variables as motivation. Such variables might indicate whether missing values in dependent variables are correlated with independent variables (e.g., interest) or the dependent variable itself (e.g. lack of motivation independently of interest).

Abstract: Debates concerning the relationship between home and school had continued throughout the 19th century, they culminated at the turn of the 20th century, leading up to the time of the Weimar Republic. This is […] the time which [the authors] wish to examine more closely in [this article] because it shows a complex fabric of contradictory interests. [The authors] suspect that questions of influence among teachers and parents arose time and again in the field of progressively oriented schools, which aspired to implement changes with respect to lessons as well as school organisation. Progressive schools furthermore propagated participation in the Free School Community. These schools were particularly dependent on parents, regardless of whether the school was a private or test school that had to be politically approved. [The authors] will exemplarily depict activities and discussions of headmasters and parents and between teaching staff and parent councils at two Prussian schools. One school is a private school with what one could call progressive teaching: Berthold-Otto Schule in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The other is a progressive oriented "Sammelschule", i.e. a school based on a newly initiated comprehensive form, which was also understood as an endorsement of progressive teaching. [The authors'] choice of these schools was guided by the assumption that these schools considered themselves progressive, which forced them to find new ways to develop their cooperation with parents. First [the authors] would like to explain the historical background in Prussia from a legal perspective, how legislation evolved concerning parent councils (which were legally recognized in 1919), and which reactions this provoked on the teachers' side. Given the two examples, [they] will show how parents positioned themselves in relation to teachers and in what way and in what areas they gained power in the Foucauldian sense of influence. Finally, [the authors] will briefly discuss the question of whether this should be conceived of as a disempowerment of teachers, and if so, in what respect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Trajectory data of simultaneously moving objects is being recorded in many different domains and applications. However, existing techniques that utilise such data often fail to capture characteristic traits or lack theoretical guarantees. We propose a novel class of spatio-temporal convolution kernels to capture similarities in multi-object scenarios. The abstract kernel is a composition of a temporal and a spatial kernel and its actual instantiations depend on the application at hand. Empirically, we compare our kernels and efficient approximations thereof to baseline techniques for clustering tasks using artificial and real world data from team sports. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): This study illustrates an overarching psychometric approach of broad relevance to investigations of 2 sources of construct-relevant psychometric multidimensionality present in many complex multidimensional instruments routinely used in psychological and educational research. These 2 sources of construct-relevant psychometric multidimensionality are related to (a) the fallible nature of indicators as perfect indicators of a single construct, and (b) the hierarchical nature of the constructs being assessed. The first source is identified by comparing confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) solutions. The second source is identified by comparing first-order, hierarchical, and bifactor measurement models. To provide an applied illustration of the substantive relevance of this framework, we first apply these models to a sample of German children (N = 1,957) who completed the Self-Description Questionnaire (SDQ-I). Then, in a second study using a simulated data set, we provide a more pedagogical illustration of the proposed framework and the broad range of possible applications of bifactor ESEM models.
