Abstract:
A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online space for learning with no prerequisites for entry. All content is delivered online and learners interact with the content by navigating through it, assessing their progress, writing down their knowledge, and sometimes interacting with other students. The European project Information Literacy Online is an example of a MOOC. It has a number of set goals: it should offer study in six European languages, it should deliver content that can be re-used, it should be used mostly by self-paced learners who progress at their own speed through the content, and subsequently assess and see their progress as they go. The aim of this paper is to discuss how to build a multilingual MOOC in a location-independent and distributed collaboration scenario. The project requirements have shaped a content creation progress, an authoring workflow, which we present in this paper. While the MOOC is delivered on the OpenEdX platform, the authoring workflow is centered around a versioning system which has allowed quality control processes, automated transformation processes, and the contribution of content from multiple places to occur in an asynchronous manner. This paper describes the workflow, sketches the technical choices made in the process, the issues encountered and their workarounds and reports on the experience gained thus far. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Oktober 2020) digital stattfindet. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Objective: There is scarce research on the effects of mindfulness in individual therapy. As many practitioners integrate mindfulness exercises into individual therapy, empirical evidence is of high clinical relevance. Method: We investigated the effects of a session‐introducing intervention with mindfulness elements (SIIME) in a randomized, controlled design. The effects of SIIME on therapeutic alliance and symptomatic outcome were compared with progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and treatment‐as‐usual (TAU) control conditions. The sample comprised 162 patients with anxiety and depression. Results: Multilevel modeling revealed a significant symptom reduction and significant increase of alliance over the course of therapy. There were no significant time-condition interactions on outcome and alliance, indicating the comparable efficiency of all three treatment conditions. Conclusions: We found no advantage of SIIME versus PMR and TAU. Add‐on mindfulness might not improve individual therapy related to alliance and outcome. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The development of multimodal sensor-based applications designed to support learners with the improvement of their skills is expensive since most of these applications are tailor-made and built from scratch. In this paper, we show how the Presentation Trainer (PT), a multimodal sensor-based application designed to support the development of public speaking skills, can be modularly extended with a Virtual Reality real-time feedback module (VR module), which makes usage of the PT more immersive and comprehensive. The described study consists of a formative evaluation and has two main objectives. Firstly, a technical objective is concerned with the feasibility of extending the PT with an immersive VR Module. Secondly, a user experience objective focuses on the level of satisfaction of interacting with the VR extended PT. To study these objectives, we conducted user tests with 20 participants. Results from our test show the feasibility of modularly extending existing multimodal sensor-based applications, and in terms of learning and user experience, results indicate a positive attitude of the participants towards using the application (PT+VR module). Abstract:
Formative assessment is considered to be a promising teaching practice for promoting teaching and learning processes. The implementation of teaching practices into instruction involves intervening with a learning environment that is characterised by certain features of instructional quality. Our study aims to contribute to the understanding of formative assessment by analysing the interplay between a formative assessment intervention and aspects of general instructional quality. In a quasi-experimental study design, 15 teachers participated in a control group (n = 361 students) and 20 teachers in the intervention classes (n = 498 students) implemented a curriculum-embedded formative assessment tool in their ninth-grade mathematics classes. No effects were found for the intervention on the assessed aspects of general instructional quality (process-oriented instruction, teacher-student relationship, effective use of instructional time). However, multilevel regression analyses revealed an interaction effect between the intervention and process-orientation and the effective use of instruction time. Our findings suggest that implementing formative assessment tools do not seem to suffice regarding changes in general instructional quality, but that an intervention with detailed material and guidelines can counterbalance effects of instructional quality, fostering students' achievement in classes with lower degrees of process orientation and a less effective use of instructional time. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Background: Insufficient handoffs lead to an increase in the risk of complications and malpractice, treatment delays, prolonged hospital stays, costs and patient complaints. The German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (DGAI) and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) recommend the implementation of a communication procedure according to the SBAR concept. So far, there have been few curricular requirements in Germany regarding handoffs. Methods: As part of the EU-funded PATIENT project an online-based cross-sectional needs analysis was conducted in three countries. In Aachen, 237 medical students answered 45 items concerning handoffs in three sections: A: skills (relevance and self-assessment), B: clinical experience (agreement), C: curricula content (presence and relevance). Data was recorded using a Likert scale (0-7). Results: The students rated an adequate handoff performance as highly important (M = 6.8; SD: ±0.6) and their own expertise as low (M = 4.0; SD: ±1.3). A high training need was identified for writing discharge letters and performing accurate handoffs. The students were aware of the link between adequate handoffs and patient safety (M = 6.5; SD: ±0.9). They considered standardized handoff procedures as an important curricular component (M = 6.1; SD: ±1.1). From their point of view, the handling of medical errors is underrepresented in the curriculum (61.7 %). Conclusion: A need for handoff training was revealed, especially regarding transfers and discharges. Accordingly, learning objectives were determined and training modules developed and integrated into the curriculum in Aachen. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
This study set out to examine the effects of a morpheme-based training on reading and writing in 5th and 6th graders (N=47), who have poor literacy skills and speak German as a second language. A computerized training, consisting of a visual computerized lexical decision task (comprising 2880 inflections and derivations, presented in 12 sessions), was designed to encourage fast morphological analysis in word processing. The children were divided between two groups: the one underwent a morpheme-based training, in which word-stems of words were presented for a limited duration, while pre- and suffixes remained on screen until response. Another group received a control training consisting of the same task, except that the duration of presentation of a non-morphological unit was restricted. In a Word Disruption Task, participants read words under three conditions: morphological separation (with symbols separating between the words' morphemes), non-morphological separation (with symbols separating between non-morphological units of words) and no-separation (with symbols presented at the beginning and end of each word). The group receiving the morpheme-based program improved more than the control group in terms of word reading fluency in the morphological condition. The former group also presented similar word reading fluency after training in the morphological condition and the in no-separation condition, thereby suggesting that the morpheme-based training contributed to the integration of morphological decomposition into the process of word recognition. At the same time, both groups similarly improved in other measures of word reading fluency. With regard to spelling, the morpheme-based training group showed a larger improvement than the control group in spelling of trained items, and a unique improvement in spelling of untrained items (untrained word-stems integrated into trained pre- and suffixes). The results further suggest some contribution of the morpheme-based training to performance in a standardized spelling task. The morpheme-based training did not, however, show any unique effect on comprehension. These results suggest that the morpheme-based training is effective in enhancing some basic literacy skill in the population examined, i.e. morphological analysis in word processing and the access to orthographic representations in spelling, with no specific effects on reading fluency and comprehension. Abstract:
Thoughtful decision-making to resolve socioscientific issues is central to science, technology, society, and environment (STSE) education. One approach for attaining this goal involves fostering students' decision-making processes. Thus, the present study explores whether the application of decision-making strategies, combined with reflections on the decision-making processes of others, enhances decision-making competence. In addition, this study examines whether this process is supported by elements of self-regulated learning, i.e., self-reflection regarding one's own performance and the setting of goals for subsequent tasks. A computer-based training program which involves the resolution of socioscientific issues related to sustainable development was developed in two versions: with and without elements of self-regulated learning. Its effects on decision-making competence were analyzed using a pre test-post test follow-up control-group design (N = 242 high school students). Decision-making competence was assessed using an open-ended questionnaire that focused on three facets: consideration of advantages and disadvantages, metadecision aspects, and reflection on the decision-making processes of others. The findings suggest that students in both training groups incorporated aspects of metadecision into their statements more often than students in the control group. Furthermore, both training groups were more suc- cessful in reflecting on the decision-making processes of others. The students who received additional training in self-regulated learning showed greater benefits in terms of metadecision aspects and reflection, and these effects remained significant two months later. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the application of decision-making strategies, combined with reflections on the decision-making process and elements of self-regulated learning, is a fruitful approach in STSE education.
