Abstract:
The structure of academic self-concept (ASC) is assumed to be multidimensional and hierarchical. This methodological review considers the most central models depicting the structure of ASC: a higher-order factor model, the Marsh/Shavelson model, the nested Marsh/Shavelson model, a bifactor representation based on exploratory structural equation modeling, and a first-order factor model. We elaborate on how these models represent the theoretical assumptions on the structure of ASC and outline their inherent psychometric properties. We analyzed these models using a data set of German 10th-grade students (N = 1,232) including a wide range of domain-specific ASCs as well as general ASC. The correlations among ASCs and between ASCs and academic achievement varied depending on the structural model used. We conclude with discussing recommendations for research purposes and advantages and limitations of each ASC model. Our approach may also guide research on other affective or motivational constructs (e.g., academic anxiety or interest). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
According to the goal orientation model, students' achievement goals and beliefs are interrelated. Within this framework, research and theory have so far assumed that achievement goals are associated with students' beliefs of causes of success, the latter representing students' subjective beliefs about the factors contributing to success at school. So far, this line of research has been restricted to a few cross-sectional studies. We examined the temporal relations between achievement goals (mastery, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals) and students' beliefs of causes of success, the latter operationalized by asking the students to rate the subjective importance of diligence, effort, and ability for school success. Achievement goals and beliefs of causes of success were measured twice with a time lag of one school year with a sample of N = 2044 German secondary school students. Cross-lagged panel models were estimated to examine the temporal relations between achievement goals and beliefs of causes of success while controlling for students' secondary school track, socio-economic status, and Grade Point Average. Former mastery goals were found to be positively related to later importance ratings of diligence for school success; former performance-approach goals were found to be positively related to later importance ratings of ability. Boys and girls were found to display similar relations among constructs but they showed differential mean levels on both the achievement goal constructs and the beliefs of causes of success. Implications for research on achievement goals and practice using intervention approaches are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This study extended the internal/external reference model to multiple languages including students' language of instruction, first foreign language, and second foreign language. We examined whether social and dimensional comparisons play similar roles in the formation of students' self-concept related to different languages and whether dimensional comparisons result in contrast or assimilation effects. All students had German as the language of instruction and English as the first foreign language. Students were divided into a subsample (N = 487) learning French as a second foreign language and a subsample (N = 481) learning Latin. Invariance tests demonstrated that the achievement-self-concept relations were similar across the subsamples, but interesting group differences became apparent when analyzing the French and Latin subsamples separately. Abstract:
Background: Findings on whether immigrant students suffer from higher levels of peer victimization have been inconsistent, perhaps due to a blend of measures for personal and ethnic peer victimization. Objective: In this study, we investigated personal and ethnic peer victimization using latent profile analyses. The profiles were related to various predictor and outcome variables. Participants and Setting: The sample consisted of N = 4367 German elementary school students attending grades 3 and 4. Methods: The students responded to eight items addressing personal peer victimization and one item addressing ethnic peer victimization. Results: The findings indicated a three-profile solution. In Profile 1, students experienced a combination of personal and ethnic peer victimization; Profile 2 contained students without any victimization experiences; in Profile 3, students experienced personal peer victimization only. Relative to native German-speaking students, non-native German-speaking students had a higher chance to be classified in Profile 1 compared to Profiles 2 and 3. Both profiles of peer victimization (i.e., Profiles 1 and 3) were associated with negative outcomes including higher levels of different types of anxiety and depression, and lower levels of self-esteem and peer self-concept. Conclusions: Student subgroups of different patterns of peer victimization were found, whereby ethnic peer victimization was blended with personal peer victimization in one subgroup, and personal peer victimization was experienced in a pure form in another subgroup. The two victimization subgroups did not differ with regard to outcomes, but were differentially predicted by students' native language. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The Generalized Internal/External Frame of Reference Model offers a framework according to which the perception of teacher characteristics might impact on students' motivation within and between subjects. In the present study, relations between perceived teacher unfairness and student motivation in math and German were examined. In a sample of N = 1685 German secondary school students, perceived teacher unfairness was found to be negatively related with student self-concept, interest, and importance of doing well on the task within the subjects of math and German, while being positively related with the three aspects of student motivation between subjects. Mediation analyses revealed partial mediation through academic self-concept within, and complete mediation between subjects. The results imply that students' motivation in one subject is not only related to perceived teacher characteristics in the corresponding subject, but also to the experiences that these students make with teachers in another subject. Abstract:
Expectancy-value theory (EVT) is a popular framework to understand and improve students' motivation. Unfortunately, limited research has verified whether EVT predictions generalize to students with low levels of cognitive ability. This study relies on Grade 5 and 8 data from 177 students with low levels of cognitive ability and a matched sample of 177 students with average to high cognitive ability from the German "Project for the Analysis of Learning and Achievement in Mathematics." Results showed that students with low levels of cognitive ability were able to differentiate EVT components. Both groups demonstrated a similar downward developmental trend in motivation from early to middle adolescence, and similar relations between EVT components and levels of efforts, self-regulation, and mathematics class grades. Abstract:
Background: Positive school attitudes defined as students' school liking and school attachment are positively related to many desirable outcomes. Student-teacher relations have often been considered to be an important determinant of school attitudes. Aims: Students' perceived teacher acceptance was used as an indicator for student-teacher relations. Using a longitudinal data set, we examined the developmental trajectories of school attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance. In addition, we studied the temporal relations between both constructs.. We also examined gender differences in the mean levels, mean level development, and relations of school attitudes and teacher acceptance. Sample: The sample consisted of 2,376 German elementary school students. Methods: The students rated their school attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance three times across grade levels 3-4. Latent growth curve models were used to examine the developmental trajectories of both constructs. Cross‐lagged panel models were used to examine the temporal relations between both constructs. Results: Positive school attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance declined across time. School attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance were positively and reciprocally related across the three waves. Boys and girls did not differ in their temporal relations between school attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance and in the developmental trajectories of both constructs. Girls were found to display higher mean levels of school attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance. Conclusions: Research and practice should seek for effective means to counteract the decline of students' positive school attitudes and perceived teacher acceptance. Interventions to foster students' school attitudes might benefit from enhancing student-teacher relations, and vice versa. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This study expanded on research on temporal relations among motivation constructs as stated by expectancy-value theory, which has so far neglected the differentiation of value facets, the examination of long time spans with multiple measurement waves, and domain-specific patterns of findings. We examined the longitudinal relations among academic self-concept, intrinsic value, and attainment value in the three domains of math, German, and English across 5 annual measurement waves covering Grades 5 to 9 with German secondary school students (N = 2,116). The analyses based on cross-lagged panel models. In math and English, former academic self-concept was positively related to later intrinsic value and attainment value. In German, former intrinsic value and attainment value were positively related to later academic self-concept. The cross-lagged relations among value constructs varied according to the domain, hinting at the domain specificity of findings. The relations among academic self-concept, intrinsic value, and attainment value in the 3 domains did not change in size across students' secondary school years. In addition, the pattern of all relations remained stable when controlling for students' domain-specific achievement measured by school grades in the respective domains. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This study extends the classic constructive dialogue/debate between self-concept and self-efficacy researchers (Marsh, Roche, Pajares, & Miller, 1997) regarding the distinctions between these 2 constructs. The study is a substantive-methodological synergy, bringing together new substantive, theoretical, and statistical models and developing new tests of the classic jingle-jangle fallacy. We demonstrate that in a representative sample of 3,350 students from math classes in 43 German schools, generalized math self-efficacy and math outcome expectancies were indistinguishable from math self-concept, but were distinct from test-related and functional measures of self-efficacy. This is consistent with the jingle-jangle fallacies that are proposed. On the basis of pretest variables, we demonstrate negative frame-of-reference effects in social (big-fish-little-pond effect) and dimensional (internal/external frame-of-reference effect) comparisons for three self-concept-like constructs in each of the first 4 years of secondary school. In contrast, none of the frame-of-reference effects were significantly negative for either of the two self-efficacy-like constructs in any of the 4 years of testing. After controlling for pretest variables, each of the 3 self-concept-like constructs (math self-concept, outcome expectancy, and generalized math self-efficacy) in each of the 4 years of secondary school was more strongly related to posttest outcomes (school grades, test scores, future aspirations) than were the corresponding 2 self-efficacy-like factors. Extending discussion by Marsh et al. (1997), we clarify distinctions between self-efficacy and self-concept; the role of evaluation, worthiness, and outcome expectancy in self-efficacy measures; and complications in generalized and global measures of self-efficacy. Abstract:
The internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model assumes the interplay of social and dimensional comparisons in the formation of domain-specific academic self-concepts. The present study tests the generalizability of the I/E model assumptions across students from different ability tracks. While the findings from previous studies implied the similar use of social comparisons with students from different ability tracks, evidence has been missing so far whether students from different ability tracks apply dimensional comparisons to the same extent. Students from lower ability tracks are said to be confronted with negative stereotypes and felt deprivation which might enforce or weaken the use of dimensional comparisons. For the analyses, students from the academic track (N = 702) and the vocational track (N = 528) of German secondary schools were included as these two groups represent two extreme groups of ability tracks which might thus maximize the power of detecting differences in the use of social and dimensional comparisons. Both the original I/E model only including math and verbal achievement and self-concepts measures and an I/E model extended to five school subjects (math, German, English, physics, and biology) were examined. The results indicated invariance across school tracks for both the original I/E model and the extended I/E model when controlling for students' gender, socioeconomic status, and cognitive ability.
