Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The study investigates the cognitive load of students working on tasks that require the comprehension of multiple documents (Multiple Document Comprehension, MDC). In a sample of 310 students, perceived task difficulty (PD) and mental effort (ME) were examined in terms of task characteristics, individual characteristics, and students' processing behavior. Moreover, it was investigated if PD and ME can still contribute to MDC while controlling for these variables. The perceived difficulty of the task was shown to be related to the number of documents, text length, study level, and sourcing. Mental effort was predicted by text length, study level, and processing time. When including these variables as covariates, cognitive load was incrementally predictive of MDC. The results are discussed in terms of how working memory resources can shape the process of comprehending multiple documents. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
For many years, reading comprehension in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) was measured via paper‐based assessment (PBA). In the 2015 cycle, computer‐based assessment (CBA) was introduced, raising the question of whether central equivalence criteria required for a valid interpretation of the results are fulfilled. As an extension of the PISA 2012 main study in Germany, a random subsample of two intact PISA reading clusters, either computerized or paper‐based, was assessed using a random group design with an additional within‐subject variation. The results are in line with the hypothesis of construct equivalence. That is, the latent cross‐mode correlation of PISA reading comprehension was not significantly different from the expected correlation between the two clusters. Significant mode effects on item difficulties were observed for a small number of items only. Interindividual differences found in mode effects were negatively correlated with reading comprehension, but were not predicted by basic computer skills or gender. Further differences between modes were found with respect to the number of missing values.

Abstract:
In this paper, we developed a method to extract item-level response times from log data that are available in computer-based assessments (CBA) and paper-based assessments (PBA) with digital pens. Based on response times that were extracted using only time differences between responses, we used the bivariate generalized linear IRT model framework (B-GLIRT, [1]) to investigate response times as indicators for response processes. A parameterization that includes an interaction between the latent speed factor and the latent ability factor in the cross-relation function was found to fit the data best in CBA and PBA. Data were collected with a within-subject design in a national add-on study to PISA 2012 administering two clusters of PISA 2009 reading units. After investigating the invariance of the measurement models for ability and speed between boys and girls, we found the expected gender effect in reading ability to coincide with a gender effect in speed in CBA. Taking this result as indication for the validity of the time measures extracted from time differences between responses, we analyzed the PBA data and found the same gender effects for ability and speed. Analyzing PBA and CBA data together we identified the ability mode effect as the latent difference between reading measured in CBA and PBA. Similar to the gender effect the mode effect in ability was observed together with a difference in the latent speed between modes. However, while the relationship between speed and ability is identical for boys and girls we found hints for mode differences in the estimated parameters of the cross-relation function used in the B-GLIRT model. Abstract:
Abstract:
The proposed project focuses on the comprehension of multiple documents in university students. Although strategies and skills are required to achieve a comprehensive understanding of multiple documents for studying successfully, many students struggle with important parts of this process. The proposed project seeks to investigate how interindividual differences in the representation of a task will affect students' comprehension, and examines the effectiveness of a short-term intervention on the students' performance and behavior when dealing with multiple documents. Abstract (english):
A critical evaluation of results to find useful information is essential when doing a web search. In this study, we investigated the evaluation skills of secondary school students, based on their behavior in selecting links from a search engine result page (SERP). To clarify the role of reading when evaluating online information, we assessed students' individual reading skills on word, sentence, and text level. Data from 416 15-year-old students participating in a computer based German add-on study to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2012 were investigated. Using generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs), it was found that reading skills affected the ability to evaluate online information. These effects were influenced by the distinctiveness of information in relevance and students' navigation to subsequent SERPs or websites. The results are interpreted to show that skilled readers are able to allocate their cognitive resources more efficiently than less skilled readers when evaluating online information. Implications are discussed in terms of underlying cognitive processes when making web search decisions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Receiving and using web-based information has become part of everyday life, but the non-linear presentation of information can make considerable demands on cognitive resources, affecting text comprehension. This study examined whether memory updating predicts students' comprehension of digital hypertext over and above skills in reading linearly structured text, and whether this association is affected by particular characteristics of reading tasks, the hypertext and individual reading behavior. Measures included reading comprehension as assessed via hypertext (digital reading) and linear text (linear reading) as well as memory updating among 15-year-old German students (N = 288). The number of nodes in a hypertext and cognitive reading operations required for task processing were regarded as task characteristics. Indicators of reader behavior were derived from log files. The results demonstrated a general effect of memory updating on digital reading over and above linear reading. This effect was not affected by the number of available nodes but by cognitive reading operations and individual reader behavior. Implications for students' cognitive processing of hypertexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Introduction. Multiple imputation (MI) is one of the most highly recommended methods for replacing missing values in research data. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate missing data handling in SEM by analyzing two modified data examples from educational psychology, and to give practical recommendations for applied researchers. Method. We provide two examples (N = 589 and N = 621, respectively) based on previous studies of students' self-concepts, mastery goals and performance avoidance goals, and a 7-step tutorial. Then, we produced 20% and 40% missing data under three missing mechanisms by these complete, genuine data sets. The resulting datasets were then analyzed by (1) listwise deletion and structural equation models (SEM), (2) full information maximum likelihood (FIML) with SEM, and (3) MI combined with SEM and pooling. Thus, the results stem from 2 x 3 x 3 conditions. Results. Previous research was replicated by illustrating a practical way to combine MI with SEM and pooling. The assumed factor structure was depicted in both examples with multiply imputed values applied. Discussion. We suggest adding variables to clarify the missing data mechanism, especially for dependent variables as motivation. Such variables might indicate whether missing values in dependent variables are correlated with independent variables (e.g., interest) or the dependent variable itself (e.g. lack of motivation independently of interest). Abstract (english):
Reading and understanding digital text that is organized in a non-linear hypertext format can be challenging for students as it requires a more self-directed selection of text pieces compared to reading linear texts. This study aims at investigating how individual differences in students' skills in comprehending digital text can be explained by their navigation behavior and various underlying skills. Students' navigation behavior was operationalized by their selection of task-relevant hypertext pages; students' abilities in terms of reading linear texts, dealing with computer interfaces more generally, and evaluating the usefulness of online information were considered as underlying skills. We hypothesized that basic computer skills and evaluating online information would explain performance in digital reading above and beyond reading skills measured with linear texts. These effects were expected to be mediated by navigation behavior. A subsample of 15-year-old German students who participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 was investigated (N = 888). The results confirmed the hypothesized mediation between linear reading, navigation behavior, and digital reading. Moreover, navigation behavior also mediated the relation between basic computer skills and digital reading but not the relation between evaluating online information and digital reading. Implications regarding processes in digital reading and navigation of hypertexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
