Abstract (english): This longitudinal study examines the differences between monolingual children and children with German as a second language (GSL) in reading predictors. In structural equation modeling, we assessed the relationships between different reading predictors such as nonverbal intelligence, phonological working memory, language skills, rapid naming, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness in preschool and at the beginning of elementary school. The relationship patterns between the predictors were consistent for monolingual (n = 111) and GSL children (n = 282). However, the predictors' influence on reading skills at the end of first and second grade of elementary school varied between the language groups: In monolingual children, phonological awareness was the strongest predictor of decoding speed as an indicator of reading ability. However, in GSL children phonological awareness had no significant influence on decoding speed, whereas nonverbal intelligence explained a major part of the variance in decoding speed.

Abstract (english): Background & Aims: In primary schools learning difficulties often occur in spite of an unimpaired intellectual ability. Experts differ substantively with regard to their appreciation of how many children are affected by these unexpected difficulties, which is also due to the divergent definitions of this phenomenon. On the one hand, the term "learning difficulties" is used to denominate poor learners whose results in basic scholastic achievement tests (reading, spelling, and/or calculating) are very low compared to same-aged peers. On the other hand, the term is used to indicate children with learning disorders and is thus taken as a clinical diagnosis classified in ICD10 (WHO, 2005). This classification defines that children with learning disorders do not only perform below average but also show a large discrepancy between their low achievement and their much higher intellectual ability. This IQ-achievement-discrepancy criterion is controversial because poor learners do not differ from children with learning disorders in terms of causal factors, socio-emotional consequences, and therapeutic responsiveness (e. g. Mähler et al., 2011). Despite these findings, in Germany practitioners usually distinguish between children with and without ICD-diagnosis: Scholastic remedy and public funding of interventions often depend on a diagnosed learning disorder. Therefore, the current study was designed to find out how many children are unexpected poor learners and how many of them do not fulfil the IQ-achievement-discrepancy criterion and are therefore often neglected by the educational system.Another reason for different prevalence rate estimations is that most studies presented until now do not measure all basic scholastic achievements, and instead concentrate on the achievement of their interest. Under these circumstances further learning difficulties cannot be detected and in consequence distinct diagnoses are not possible. The amount of children with multiple learning difficulties is included into the prevalence rates of isolated learning difficulties. Therefore, the amount of children with isolated learning disorders might be overrated. To explore the extend of this overestimation, the prevalence rates of this study were estimated in two different ways: On the one hand, all three basic scholastic skills were included in the diagnostic process to distinguish isolated and multiple deficits accurately. On the other hand, only the scholastic achievement of diagnostic interest was considered (e. g. reading scores to identify children with reading disorder). Methods: The reading, spelling, and calculating performances as well as the intellectual abilities of 2195 children (49.0 % girls) were assessed with standardized German achievement tests and a nonverbal IQ-test. During the assessment period the children were at the end of 2nd and the beginning of 3rd grade and on average 8;8 years (SD = 5 months) old. Since the group's sample statistics (means and deviations of achievement tests) differed slightly from the norm sample's statistics, all test norms were calculated anew on the basis of our sample. Thus, it is ensured that neither learning difficulties nor intellectual abilities are overestimated because of a deviation from the original test norms. Results: The results show that 32.8 % of all children scored below average at least in one achievement domain, scoring more than one standard deviation below the sample's mean. Altogether there were 23.3 % unexpected poor learners who failed despite having an unimpaired intellectual ability. However, 43 % of these poor learners did not fulfil the IQ-achievement-discrepancy criterion. Of all children 13.3 % were affected by a learning disorder. Taking a closer look at the separate scholastic achievements, 4 to 6 % of the children were identified as poor learners and 2 to 4 % were identified as having learning disorders in a single scholastic achievement (reading, spelling, or calculating) or in multiple achievements (reading and spelling or in at least one literacy competence and calculating). Results also show that boys were twice as likely as girls to suffer from literacy difficulties, whereas girls were three times as frequently as boys affected by calculating difficulties. Few more girls were affected by combined learning difficulties in literacy and calculating, while combined learning disorders were equally frequent in boys and girls. In view of the fact that usually in prevalence studies only the scholastic achievement of interest but not all three basic achievements are assessed, we examined the influence of restricted compared to comprehensive diagnostics. The results show that under restricted diagnostic conditions, the prevalence rates doubled (in spite of reading and spelling disorder that is less increased).Discussion: A serious amount, namely around one third of all primary school children in Germany, seems to have difficulties in basic scholastic achievements. Around one quarter of all children have these difficulties despite an unimpaired intellectual disability. Even given their unimpaired intellectual abilities almost half of them do not reach the strict IQ-achievement-discrepancy criterion. While in the field this controversial criterion is nowadays less frequently applied, in Germany the educational and health system continue to be influenced by the application of an ICD-10 diagnosis. Besides the enduring scientific debate on the sense of the IQ-achievement-discrepancy and the intention to change the ICD-criteria for learning disorders, practitioners should find a way of including all children with unexpected learning difficulties in special interventions. The prevalence rates and sex distributions for poor learners and children with learning disorders reported in the present study are in the range of former research, albeit at the lower end. The less frequent incidence of unexpected learning difficulties is caused by comprehensive diagnostics of basic scholastic achievements. Taking only the achievement of diagnostic interest into account doubles prevalence rates. Hence, in research as well as in individual diagnostics it is very important to rule out further learning difficulties with broad assessments.

Abstract: Some eighty years after the discovery of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) and its dominant rhythm,
alpha (~10 Hz), the neurophysiological functions and behavioral correlates of alpha oscillations are still
under debate. Similarly, the biological mechanisms contributing to the general factor of intelligence, or g,
have been under scrutiny for decades. Individual alpha frequency (IAF), a trait-like parameter of the EEG,
has been found to correlate with individual differences in cognitive performance and cognitive abilities. Informed
by large-scale theories of neural organization emphasizing the general functional significance of oscillatory
activity, the present study replicates and extends these findings by testing the hypothesis that IAF is
related to intelligence at the level of g, rather than at the level of specific cognitive abilities. Structural equation
modeling allowed us to statistically control for measurement error when estimating the association between
IAF and intellectual functioning. In line with our hypothesis, we found a statistically reliable and substantial
correlation between IAF and g (r = .40). The magnitude of this correlation did not differ significantly between
younger and older adults, and captured all of the covariation between IAF and the cognitive abilities of reasoning,
memory, and perceptual speed. The observed association between IAF and g provides a parsimonious explanation
for the commonly observed diffuse pattern of correlations between IAF and cognitive performance.
We conclude that IAF is a marker of global architectural and functional properties of the human brain.

Abstract (english): The selection of papers for this Special Issue is intended to cover a broad set of topics in the fields of collective intelligence and language resources, such as (1) the use of crowdsourcing to generate training data for machine learning algorithms, (2) the use of web-based platforms to collaboratively annotate linguistic corpora, (3) the semi-automatic construction of lexical semantic resources through mining Wiktionary, and (4) the construction of a word sense inventory with results from Amazon Mechanical Turk and using it for a lexical substitution task. Although the papers in this special issue cannot cover the full range of current research involving CCLRs because of limited space, the topics represent a broad sample that should provide an ample taste of work in the field.

Abstract: There is mounting evidence that children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID) of nonspecific aetiology perform poorer on phonological short-term memory tasks than children matched for mental age indicating a structural deficit in a process contributing to short-term recall of verbal material. One explanation is that children with ID of nonspecific aetiology do not activate subvocal rehearsal to refresh degrading memory traces. However, existing research concerning this explanation is inconclusive since studies focussing on the word length effect (WLE) as indicator of rehearsal have revealed inconsistent results for samples with ID and because in several existing studies, it is unclear whether the WLE was caused by rehearsal or merely appeared during output of the responses. We assumed that in children with ID only output delays produce a small WLE while in typically developing 6- to 8-year-olds rehearsal and output contribute to the WLE. From this assumption we derived several predictions that were tested in an experiment including 34 children with mild or borderline ID and 34 typically developing children matched for mental age (MA). As predicted, results revealed a small but significant WLE for children with ID that was significantly smaller than the WLE in the control group. Additionally, for children with ID, a WLE was not found for the first word of each trial but the effect emerged only in later serial positions. The findings corroborate the notion that in children with ID subvocal rehearsal does not develop in line with their mental age and provide a potential explanation for the inconsistent results on the WLE in children with ID. Abstract (english): Empirical approaches to cognitive ability claim that divergent thinking represents a useful estimate for
the potential of creative thought. According to associative approaches, the ability to fluently retrieve and
combine remote associations was suggested to facilitate creative solutions. Taken together, these
approaches suggest a close relationship of associative processes and divergent thinking, which so far,
however, has not been properly tested. Therefore, the present study examines the validity of associative
abilities with respect to divergent thinking, and also, on a more general level, with respect to creativity
and intelligence. Four different word-association tasks were employed to assess associative fluency,
associative flexibility, dissociative ability, and the ability of associative combination. The sample
comprised 150 students from studies with varying amount of creativity-related demands. Associative
abilities were found to explain about half of the variance of divergent thinking ability. Latent variable
modeling confirmed the significance of dissociation and associative combination for creativity, but also
substantiates the relevance of basic associative retrieval processes for intelligence. It is concluded that
associative abilities represent valid elementary cognitive abilities underlying creativity.

Abstract: In typically developing children, working memory is linked to academic skills. However,
little is known about the role working memory plays for learning in children
with intellectual disabilities (ID). Therefore, the aims of this study were to examine
whether different working memory functions are related to reading, spelling, and
calculating in children with ID of nonspecific etiology and whether these relationships
are different from the ones found in typically developing children. Forty-seven
children with mild-to-borderline ID and 47 children matched for mental age were
tested. Although in typically developing children, only phonological short-term
memory tasks were predictive for literacy, for children with ID, visuospatial working
memory tasks also accounted for variance. In typically developing children, calculation
skills were predicted by phonological working memory tasks, whereas visuospatial
working memory resources were crucial for children with ID. Several possible
explanations are discussed for discrepancies in prediction patterns.
