Abstract:
This study investigated response styles in factual items and explored their associations with personal, contextual and cultural factors. Responses on various factual questions, cognitive tests and interviewers' observational data from a total of 152,514 respondents in 22 countries in the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) were analysed. Indexes of extreme, midpoint and acquiescent response styles were extracted from Likert-scale and dichotomous responses of factual items. A general response style (GRS) with a positive loading of extreme response style and negative loadings of midpoint and acquiescent response styles was confirmed. This factor showed a similar cross-cultural patterning as another general factor from attitudinal and self-evaluative items of Likert scales in a previous study, which indicated the pervasiveness of response styles irrespective of types of survey items. In a multilevel analysis, the individual-level GRS was found to be negatively related to being male, educational level and literacy competency, and positively related to 3rd-person presence and background noise, and at country level negatively associated with socioeconomic development. Cross-level interactions were also found. Implications on the pervasiveness and nature of response styles are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
There is hardly any cross-cultural research on the measurement invariance of the Brief Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scales (BMSLSS). The current article evaluates the measurement invariance of the BMSLSS across cultural contexts. This cross-sectional study sampled 7,739 adolescents and emerging adults in 23 countries. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of configural and partial measurement weights invariance models, indicating similar patterns and strengths in factor loading for both adolescents and emerging adults across various countries. We found insufficient evidence for scalar invariance in both the adolescents' and the emerging adults' samples. A multi-level confirmatory factor analysis indicated configural invariance of the structure at country and individual level. Internal consistency, evaluated by alpha and omega coefficients per country, yielded acceptable results. The translated BMSLSS across different cultural contexts presents good psychometric characteristics similar to what has been reported in the original scale, though scalar invariance remains problematic. Our results indicate that the BMSLSS forms a brief measure of life satisfaction, which has accrued substantial evidence of construct validity, thus suitable for use in cross-cultural surveys with adolescents and emerging adults, although evaluation of degree of invariance must be carried out to ensure its suitability for mean comparisons. Abstract:
This paper investigates the integration of response styles (extreme and midpoint responding and socially desirable responding) and their effects on self-reports among 76,887 teachers from 18 countries in the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). Socially desirable responding (with a positive and a negative impression management factor) and 17 core constructs related to the teaching profession were measured with Likert scales; extreme and midpoint response styles were derived from these measures. Using factor analysis, a general response style was extracted with socially desirable and extreme response styles as positive indicators and midpoint response style as a negative indicator. This general response style was more strongly correlated with constructs of personal involvement, such as teacher efficacy and job satisfaction, than constructs with less personal involvement, at both the individual and country level; however, statistical correction for response styles had negligible effects on the size of cross-cultural differences and country rankings in any construct. We conclude that the general response style can be interpreted as response amplification versus moderation, and that there is no indication that correcting for the general response style increases the validity of cross-cultural comparisons of TALIS teacher data. Abstract:
This article investigated the dimensionality, measurement invariance, and cross-cultural variations of social desirability. A total of 3,471 university students from 20 countries completed an adapted version of the Marlowe-Crowne scale. A two-dimensional structure was revealed in the pooled sample, distinguishing enhancement (endorsement of positive self-description) and denial (rejection of negative self-description). The factor structure was supported in most countries; medium-sized item bias was found in two denial items. In a multilevel analysis, we found that (a) there was more cross-cultural variation in denial than enhancement; (b) females tended to score higher on enhancement whereas males tended to score higher on denial; (c) the Human Development Index, an indicator of country socioeconomic development, was the best (negative) predictor of denial; and (d) both enhancement and denial seemed to be associated with country-level values and personality pertinent to "fitting in." We conclude that social desirability has a positive and a negative impression management dimension that are meaningfully associated with country-level characteristics, and we argue that social desirability is better interpreted as culturally regulated response amplification. Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The paper discusses potentials of the documentary method in cultural comparative research projects, referring to the example of a currently undertaken study about teacher-student-relationships at two primary schools situated in Berlin and London. Firstly, based on a praxeological concept of culture, methodological challenges of such studies are labeled. In this regard, a sensitivity for the overlay of meanings originating in different spaces and times in agent's practices is demanded. The paper argues consequences of Karl Mannheim's assumption about the situatedness of knowledge and points to possibilities of interpretation and translation of crossnational collected data. Potentials of comparative analysis and generation of types in documentary method are analysed in respect to cultural comparison. Finally the reflective-responsive approach in comparison is explained, which has been chosen in the exemplary study. An analysis of a responsive discussion shall clarify the benefits of this approach, which offers insights in the complex integration of the "own" and the "other".

Abstract (english):
A growing body of research compares educational processes and outcomes cross-nationally, but up to now there are only few studies on teachers and their expertise involving more than a handful of countries. Drawing on data from the OECD-Teaching and Learning International Survey the present chapter aims at filling this research gap. It compares different aspects of teacher quality namely mathematics teachers qualification, beliefs about the nature of teaching and learning and classroom teaching practices across 23 countries. Results of descriptive and multivariate analyses show the three facets and their subscales to be distinct but interrelated across countries. At the same time significant differences in profiles are observed cross-nationally. The findings suggest both, global and country-specific effects on teacher quality.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The study of morality necessarily leads to a perspective that conceives of psychology primarily as a cultural science rather than a natural science. In the chapter the perspective of a cultural psychology is taken. Under this perspective, the relationship between culture and morality is intrinsic; culture cannot be defined or investigated without heeding morality, and morality can also not be understood without reference to the culture concept. Secondly, cultural rules complement natural laws in explaining and understanding human activities (behaviors, cognition, affects). Human action (not behaviour) is taken as the empirical and analytical unit for psychology. It serves as an analytical universal and methodically as tertium comparationis. The perspective is discussed by arguing for the centrality of agency, transcultural standards of duty and contextualization of research on moral development.(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The chapter first clarifies that morality is a genuine part of culture, and that therefore these concepts can not be investigated independently. The classical dichotomy of a moral relativism and an ethical universalism is then used as a framework for the discussion of present day cross-cultural research on moral development. Naturally, the focus is on Kohlberg's theory. Positive evidence as well as weaknesses of this theory are summarized in the light of cross-cultural research, and a culture specific (Chinese) further development of the theory is presented. More recent formulations and research on domain specific social cognition are also summarized. Finally the relation between culture and morality is used as a basis of a more general criticism of the present day nomothetical psychology.
