Abstract (english):
This book addresses challenges in the theoretically and empirically adequate assessment of competencies in educational settings. It presents the scientific projects of the priority program "Competence Models for Assessing Individual Learning Outcomes and Evaluating Educational Processes," which focused on competence assessment across disciplines in Germany. The six-year program coordinated 30 research projects involving experts from the fields of psychology, educational science, and subject-specific didactics. The main reference point for all projects is the concept of "competencies," which are defined as "context-specific cognitive dispositions that are acquired and needed to successfully cope with certain situations or tasks in specific domains" (Koeppen et al., 2008, p. 62). The projects investigate different aspects of competence assessment: The primary focus lies on the development of cognitive models of competencies, complemented by the construction of psychometric models based on these theoretical models. In turn, the psychometric models constitute the basis for the construction of instruments for effectively measuring competencies. The assessment of competencies plays a key role in optimizing educational processes and improving the effectiveness of educational systems. This book contributes to this challenging endeavor by meeting the need for more integrative, interdisciplinary research on the structure, levels, and development of competencies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The effects of aging on response time were examined in a paper-based lexical-decision experiment with younger (age 18-36) and older (age 64-75) adults, applying Ratcliff's diffusion model. Using digital pens allowed the paper-based assessment of response times for single items. Age differences previously reported by Ratcliff and colleagues in computer-based experiments were partly replicated: older adults responded more conservatively than younger adults and showed a slowing of their nondecision components of RT by 53 ms. The rates of evidence accumulation (drift rate) showed no age-related differences. Participants with a higher score in a vocabulary test also had higher drift rates. The experiment demonstrates the possibility to use formal processing models with paper-based tests. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Establishing local coherence relations is central to text comprehension. Positive-causal coherence relations link a cause and its consequence, whereas negative-causal coherence relations add a contrastive meaning (negation) to the causal link. According to the cumulative cognitive complexity approach, negative-causal coherence relations are cognitively more complex than positive-causal ones. Therefore, they require greater cognitive effort during text comprehension and are acquired later in language development. The present cross-sectional study tested these predictions for German primary school children from Grades 1 to 4 and adults in reading and listening comprehension. Accuracy data in a semantic verification task support the predictions of the cumulative cognitive complexity approach. Negative-causal coherence relations are cognitively more demanding than positive-causal ones. Moreover, our findings indicate that children's comprehension of negative-causal coherence relations continues to develop throughout the course of primary school. Findings are discussed with respect to the generalizability of the cumulative cognitive complexity approach to German. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Metacognition plays an essential role in learning mathematics. However, due to the lack of observational systems for evaluation of metacognition in mathematics instruction, rarely anything is known about how metacognition is practised and fostered when teaching and learning mathematics in class. This paper presents an observational system (a rating system) developed to reliably assess metacognitive activities in mathematics instruction. It also explains the methodology used to evaluate the reliability of rating achieved with this tool and to investigate the stability of metacognitive-discursive practices between lessons of an individual teacher/class. Despite the high inference of conclusions needed to assess metacognitive-discursive instructional quality in seven dimensions, highly reliable ratings have been achieved for six dimensions. The paper discusses reasons for and consequences of the high reliability. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract:
Adolescents in low and middle income countries (LAMICs) as well as emerging economies experience high rates of poor mental health outcomes. Yet, there is limited research on risk and protective factors in these high risk environments. We set out to examine the extent to which parental support is positively associated with mental health outcomes among adolescents in 17 LAMICs and emerging economies. The study involved more than 40,557 (Females = 19,335; 47.7%) adolescents aged 12- 15 years. The data was part of the Global School Health Survey project. Using Multiple Indicator Multigroup Analysis we observed that parental support was positively associated with mental health outcomes across contexts (fit indices being: χ²(32, N = 40,557) = 125.25, p < .001, χ²/ df = 3.91, TLI = .913, CFI = .973 and RMSEA = .008). The relationship between parental support and mental health outcomes was significant in all countries with the exception of Mauritania. A multilevel analysis to test the moderating role of country socioeconomic development indicated that poor mental health was predicted by individual-level parent support (β = -.15), and the interaction between country-level socioeconomic development (as measured by the Human Development Index) and individual-level parental support (β = -.05). The significant cross-level interaction illustrates that the association between parent support and mental health was stronger in more socioeconomically developed countries, compared with less socioeconomically developed countries in these LAMICs and emerging economies. From the perspective of international psychology, our study illustrates how existing large scale datasets can be used to evaluate theoretical propositions which have been previously tested on a limited sample size. Additionally, research and policy implications are discussed in this article. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of extreme response style in cross-cultural research by integrating quantitative and qualitative evidence in a mixed methods design. In the quantitative phase, indexes of extreme response style, derived from quality of life measures from different international studies, were compared between Spain and the Netherlands. Results indicated that extreme responding was more common among Spanish than among Dutch in endorsement of items, but that the opposite was found for frequency scales including never as a response anchor. In the qualitative phase, cognitive interviews were conducted with 25 participants in each country. The integration of quantitative results and qualitative findings suggests that country differences in extreme response style may stem from various sources, including the more independent evaluation of each item by Dutch, the stronger connotations of never for Spanish and stronger emotions triggered by specific topics such as work satisfaction that was more strongly associated with insecurity for Spanish. It is concluded that the integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence can help to understand cross-cultural similarities and differences in extreme response style. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Children experience good and bad days in their performance. Although this phenomenon is well-known to teachers, parents, and students it has not been investigated empirically. We examined whether children's working memory performance varies systematically from day to day and to which extent fluctuations at faster timescales (i.e., occasions, moments) contribute to daily WM fluctuations in the school context. In an ambulatory assessment study, Grade 3 and Grade 4 students (8 to 11 years old; N ! 110) completed WM tasks on smartphones 3 times a day in school and at home for 4 weeks. Results showed substantial within-person fluctuations in children's daily WM performance. Across task conditions, day-to-day, occasion-to-occasion, and moment-to-moment variability accounted for roughly the same extent of observed day-to-day variability with large individual differences in the amount of reliable fluctuations at the different timescales. Grade 3 students were more variable than were Grade 4 students at the faster timescales, more variable WM performance at all timescales was related to lower school achievement, and more day-to-day variability was associated with lower fluid intelligence. These findings build the foundation for research on the antecedents and consequences of children's fluctuating cognitive resources. Theories about cognitive development and learning should consider performance fluctuations across and within days to understand the processes underlying long-term changes. Educational practice may be informed by the substantial WM fluctuations at all timescales and adopt interventions that increase children's attentional focus and self-regulation. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Background: In order for teaching to be successful, students need to be actively involved in learning. However, research on teaching effectiveness often neglects students' learning activities. Although it is assumed that effective teaching promotes the use of beneficial learning activities, empirical evidence for this connection is still limited. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the connection between effective teaching and reported learning activities. We hypothesize specific relations between a three-dimensional model of teaching quality (i.e., cognitive activation, supportive climate, and classroom management) and students' reported use of metacognitive strategies. Students' intrinsic motivation is considered as a mediator and a moderator of this connection. Sample: N = 1,052 students from 53 German primary school classes and their science teachers participated. Methods: Data were collected through classroom or video observation and questionnaires over a period of approximately 2 months. Multilevel analysis was utilized to test our hypotheses. Results: Each dimension of teaching quality positively predicted students' reported use of metacognitive strategies. For supportive climate, this connection was mediated by students' intrinsic motivation. Cognitive activation negatively predicted the slopes between students' reported metacognitive strategy use and motivation. Conclusions: The results support the notion that effective teaching is connected to learning activities and stress the importance of students' learning motivation. Results from the cross-level interaction could indicate that especially less motivated students' reported metacognitive strategy use might be supported by cognitively activating teaching.
