Abstract (english): Background: Collaborating with another person may help people compensate for aging-related losses in memory performance. However, collaborating in itself is effortful and draws upon individual cognitive resources. One factor that can facilitate collaboration, and decrease its resource requirements, is familiarity between interaction partners. Such facilitation should be particularly important when cognitive-mechanic resources are low. Objective: The current study was conducted to empirically test this theoretical notion. We hypothesized that cognitive aging should amplify the advantage of collaborating with a familiar partner over collaborating with an unfamiliar person. Methods: We developed an interpersonal cueing task based on the game Taboo. The task modeled an everyday-life situation in which one person cues another person to retrieve a piece of information from memory. Seventy-six younger adults (20 33 years) and 80 older adults (63 79 years) worked on this task once with their spouse and once with an unfamiliar cross-sex partner from the same age group. Collaborative performance was operationalized as the number of cue words needed until the partner guessed the target, as determined by independent trained coders. Performance in the Digit Symbol Substitution Test was used as an indicator of cognitive aging. Results: Multilevel-modeling analyses revealed that collaborating spouses outperformed collaborators who had not known each other before. This effect was comparable for both age groups but larger in persons with lower Digit Symbol scores. While participants with lower Digit Symbol scores generally performed worse in the collaborative task, they partly made up for this difference when working with the spouse. Conclusion: We conclude that spousal collaboration may offer a compensatory strategy to cope with individual aging-related losses. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): Much of the individual differences among adolescents with regard to the quality and
effectiveness of their academic and social behavior can be explained by their competencies of
self-control and self regulation. Research on metacognition and self-regulated learning provides
deeper insight into the processes and mechanisms underlying those competencies. The present
chapter provides an overview of the theoretical background and the empirical usefulness of
metacognition as well as of self-regulated learning. In particular, the relevance of both concepts
for academic achievement and skill acquisition in different areas of daily life is stressed and the
most important developmental changes and individual differences (among them gender
differences) are outlined. Especially individual differences in self-regulated learning that are
responsible for the quality and effectiveness of a number of cognitive and social activities in
adolescence are sketched. In addition, successful social-cognitive approaches to promote skill
development by training self-regulated learning are described in greater detail. To complement
the predominant social-cognitive perspective of self-regulation as a state-dependent characteristic
a more trait-like view of the component competencies of self-regulation in adolescence is
provided where a distinction is made between metacognitive and motivational as well as
volitional competencies. This view is especially helpful since these different competencies are
not only important for becoming successful in academic learning, but also in social adjustment.

Abstract (english): Active training approaches encourage self-directed exploration, whereas guided training stresses direct instruction and external guidance during training. The present research investigated interactions of individual- difference variables-motivation and cognitive ability-and training approach on performance in tasks that are similar to training tasks (analogical transfer) and tasks that are novel and distinct from training tasks (adaptive transfer). In accordance with a resource allocation framework, we expected effects of individual differences on transfer performance to be reduced after active/ exploratory training compared with guided training, because participants of exploratory training engage in the same kind of metacognitive processing during training and transfer. Consequently, attentional demands are reduced during transfer, whereas for participants of guided training the transfer situation imposes high attentional demands. Experiment 1 (N= 37) taught a word processing program and Experiment 2 (N= 110) taught a presentation program using either active/ exploratory or guided training. Consistent with previous research, training methods were equally effective for analogical transfer but active/exploratory training led to better adaptive transfer. In addition, interaction hypotheses were supported. Contrary to common recommendations, results suggest that active/exploratory training is suitable for promoting transfer even in learners with relatively low motivation and ability. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): An implication of the current research on self-regulation is to implement the promotion of self-regulated learning in schools. Teachers can promote self-regulated learning either directly by teaching learning strategies or indirectly by arranging a learning environment that enables students to practice self-regulation. This study investigates teachers´ direct and indirect promotion of self-regulated learning and its relation to the development of students´ performance. Twenty German mathematics teachers with their overall 538 students (grade 9) were videotaped for a three-lesson unit on the Pythagorean Theorem. Students´ mathematics performance was tested several times before and after the observed lessons. A low- inferent coding system was applied to assess the teachers´ implicit or explicit instruction of cognitive strategies (e.g., organization), metacognitive strategies (e.g., planning), and motivational strategies (e.g., resource management). High- inferent ratings were used to assess features of the learning environment that foster self-regulation. Results reveal that a great amount of strategy teaching takes place in an implicit way, whereas explicit strategy teaching and supportive learning environment are rare. The instruction of organization strategies and some features of the learning environment ( constructivism, transfer) relate positively to students´ performance development. In contrast to implicit strategy instruction, explicit strategy instruction was associated with a gain in performance. These results reveal a discrepancy between the usefulness of explicit strategy instruction and its rare occurrence in classrooms. (DIPF/Orig.)
