(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Background: In order for teaching to be successful, students need to be actively involved in learning. However, research on teaching effectiveness often neglects students' learning activities. Although it is assumed that effective teaching promotes the use of beneficial learning activities, empirical evidence for this connection is still limited.
Aims: This study aimed to investigate the connection between effective teaching and reported learning activities. We hypothesize specific relations between a three-dimensional model of teaching quality (i.e., cognitive activation, supportive climate, and classroom management) and students' reported use of metacognitive strategies. Students' intrinsic motivation is considered as a mediator and a moderator of this connection.
Sample: N = 1,052 students from 53 German primary school classes and their science teachers participated.
Methods: Data were collected through classroom or video observation and questionnaires over a period of approximately 2 months. Multilevel analysis was utilized to test our hypotheses.
Results: Each dimension of teaching quality positively predicted students' reported use of metacognitive strategies. For supportive climate, this connection was mediated by students' intrinsic motivation. Cognitive activation negatively predicted the slopes between students' reported metacognitive strategy use and motivation.
Conclusions: The results support the notion that effective teaching is connected to learning activities and stress the importance of students' learning motivation. Results from the cross-level interaction could indicate that especially less motivated students' reported metacognitive strategy use might be supported by cognitively activating teaching. Abstract (english): There is a recurrent paradox in the data of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA): within each participating country, there is a positive correlation between students' learning motivation and achievement; when aggregating the data at country level, this correlation becomes negative. Using PISA data across 64 countries, we investigate the association of motivation and achievement within and between countries and attempt to explain the paradox with three measures indicative of culturally preferred scale usage: cultural response style, overclaiming, and anchoring vignettes. We confirmed the paradox and found that the three measures, in particular anchoring vignettes, could partially explain the negative association between motivation and achievement at country level. Our study is intellectually indebted to the tradition, initiated by David Watkins, to go beyond a simple classification of Chinese learners as focusing on rote memory learning. We illustrate how core Chinese values impinge on educational motivation and achievement and can help to explain seemingly paradoxical cross-cultural differences. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The study examines the psychometric properties and the factor structure of the online version of the Learning and Achievement Motivation Scales (SELLMO) as well as the Academic Self Concept Scales (SESSKO) compared with the paper version. Furthermore, the study clarifies which version (paper/online) shows an increased response rate from the students. A sample of 810 prospective teachers completed either the paper or online version. Prospective teachers with A to L as first letter in their surname received the paper questionnaires; participants with M to Z responded online. The online response rate was considerably higher than the paper-based one. Moreover, we found that the paper and online versions show comparable psychometric properties. In addition, the factor structure described in the manuals could be replicated.

Abstract (english): In Germany, high school students with immigrant backgrounds are often at risk regarding their academic achievement despite possessing good motivational resources. Drawing on goal orienta-tions, educational aspirations and grades of 117 fourth graders (43 without immigrant back-ground, 27 with Turkish immigrant background, and 47 with immigrant backgrounds from several other countries) we replicate these findings for an elementary school sample. Possible differences in the functionality of goal orientations for academic learning are discussed.

Abstract: This study investigates if motivational regulation leads to a successful learning behaviour. As theoretical background served a comprehensive theoretical model of action and learning which broadens the theory of action phases with specific elements of emotional regulation. 205 bachelor students of business administration answered an online questionnaire including 53 students with detailed data on course grades and study-time measure with a daily time-diary over a period of five months.
Questionnaire Scales: Perceived Threat, Sensitive Coping, Acceptance of Responsibility, Outcome Expectancy, Self-Efficacy, Persistent Goal Pursuit: Maintenance, Persistent Goal Pursuit: Distraction, Goal Congruent Monitoring, Working with Peers, Generation of Positive Emotions, Effort Avoidance after Negative Emotions, Metacognitive Learning Strategies.
In a 2-step-analysis process based on mixed-distribution models, 5 pattern of motivational regulation were identified: Pragmatic Learning Motivation (26%), Strategic Learning Motivation (21%), Threat Oriented Leaning Motivation (20%), Negative Learning Motivation (17%), Self-Determined Learning Motivation (17%).
The study-time investment and grades of these 5 student types were as expected with one exception. The students with a negative learning motivation display surprisingly good grades and very high investment of learning time. This might be the result of a selection process and seems to be very simple compensation strategy for amotivation.
The Integrated Model of Learning and Action seems very useful to identify different styles of motivational regulation and explaining grades as well as invested learning time.

Abstract (english): This paper reports on a representative study of English as a foreign language development in German ninth-grade students (n = 209 schools, 407 classrooms, 10111 students). Multilevel regression models were specified to investigate the impact of teacher cooperation at the department level and instructional quality. Teacher cooperation was found to be positively related to two dimensions of instructional quality (structure, cognitive challenge). Cognitive challenge had a positive effect on student achievement, and teacher support had a positive effect on students' learning motivation at the end of ninth grade. However, no relationship was found between the school and classroom level factors and the change in students' achievement and learning motivation during ninth grade.

Abstract (english): Learning behavior and teaching organisation are regarded as complementary components of a learning culture. Using a model of learning motivation, we investigated the learning behavior of students using a latent class analysis. We then matched the group profiles to grades and to workload, as measured by a time-budget analysis. We found that only one group of students operating under conditions typical of traditional teaching organisation was able to regulate their learning behavior sucessfully. An alternative type of teaching organisation may assist groups of students with different profiles much more effectively.
