(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract: In most western countries, the number of 'children at risk' for poor educational outcomes seems to have been increased in recent years. Nearly 20 % of the students in those countries meanwhile fail to acquire the levels of literacy, mathematics and science achievement that are required to effectively participate in today's knowledge-based society. Thus, there is a strong need to extend research focusing on the identification of risk factors associated with these undesired educational outcomes in children. Although attempts have been made to conceptualize the issue of 'children at risk' for poor educational outcomes from the perspective of different scientific disciplines, the interplay of multiple risk factors located on the different levels focused by different disciplines has been rarely addressed. Thus, we advocate for more transdisciplinary activities integrating multiple scientific perspectives on the concept of 'children at risk' for poor educational outcomes. These activities should include at least three dimensions affecting developmental trajectories being important for children's individual academic outcomes: (1) individual characteristics including both biological as well as psychological features, (2) contextual factors, as well as dynamics defined by (3) time changes and interactions between individual and contextual categories of risk factors. Abstract: This study investigated the relations of early working-memory abilities (phonological and visual-spatial short-term memory [ STM] and complex memory and episodic buffer memory) and later developing reading skills. Sixty Hebrew-speaking children were followed from kindergarten through Grade 5. Working memory was tested in kindergarten and reading in Grades 1, 2, and 5. All memory measures, but phonological STM, correlated with reading up to Grade 5. Regression analyses (with intelligence quotient controlled) demonstrated that phonological complex memory predicted all reading skills in Grade 1, and accuracy in Grade 2. The rather understudied visual-spatial memory predicted comprehension in Grades 2 ( STM) and 5 (complex memory). The results point to an important role of the phonological complex memory in early assessment, and suggest a long-lasting role of early visual-spatial memory in predicting variance in reading. Whether this role of the visual-spatial memory is unique to the Hebrew orthography because of its visual features requires, however, further investigation. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract: A substantial proportion of children in western countries do not acquire the level of achievement in literacy, mathematics or science required to participate effectively in today's knowledge-based society (OECD 2006, 2010). These children also face a disproportionally high risk to fall behind their age-appropriate class, to be on a low educational track, to attain only a low educational qualification or even to drop out of school without any formal qualification. Different disciplines have studied these "children at risk of poor educational outcomes" using various concepts and methodological approaches. The aim of this special issue is to bring together these various perspectives and therefore to provide a more comprehensive picture of the diverse "risk factors" that are associated with poor educational outcomes. Theoretical as well as empirical contributions are included. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The present studies aimed at investigating whether children's risk for self-regulatory failure implicates poor academic outcomes even before the start of formal instruction. Therefore, we analyzed the association between children's self-regulation abilities (i.e., operationalized with different paradigms) and academic achievement (i.e., early math skills). In Study 1, we found that parent-rated self-regulation predicted early math skills in preschool children. Additionally, the time that children managed to successfully delay a response predicted early math skills. In Study 2, we found that self-regulated behavior in preschool children as measured in a newly developed computerized delay task predicted early math skills. The results are discussed with respect to the importance of children's self-regulation abilities for successful academic achievement. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Taking a (neuro-)cognitive perspective, this article deals with preconditions of successful learning and maladaptive developmental processes related to deficient learning processes and poor educational outcomes. Three strands of research are focused that have made significant contributions to the understanding of (neuro-)cognitive risks for poor educational outcomes: intelligence research, research on working memory, and research on attentional processes. Selected examples from these areas of research are provided with a summary of main conclusions. In addition, we highlight current research gaps by arguing that there is a specific need for (a) future research focusing on the interactions between the (neuro-)cognitive functions described, as well as for (b) integrating results from the (neuro-)cognitive perspective into a broader conceptual framework of risk factors. A claim is made that more research is needed linking insights from different scientific perspectives and methodological traditions to generate approaches that successfully contribute to a substantial reduction of the percentage of students with poor educational outcomes. Abstract: Various international student assessment studies during the last decades have demonstrated that the probability of academic failure is dramatically heightened among children with low socio-economic family background and those with a migration background. Additionally, children without risk background factors can equally suffer from the aforementioned learning problems: e.g. will develop learning disabilities and attention problems and have a high probability for academic failure. This seems to indicate that learning disabilities and behavioral problems are not simply a consequence of social risk factors, but are just as likely to develop as a result of risk conditions inherent in the individual. Taking this as a starting point, a group of scientists from the German Institute for International Educational Research, the Goethe University and the Sigmund-Freud-Institut developed the framework for IDeA - a center for Research on Individual Development and Adaptive Education of Children at Risk. The innovative idea was to combine longitudinal developmental research with experimental studies on educational interventions, and to focus on children with an increased probability for academic failure. In July 2008, the LOEWE Center IDeA was established with some longitudinal studies investigating the social and cognitive factors influencing children's developmental pathways. Today, the center incorporates more than a hundred scientists from various disciplines such as psychology, psycholinguistics, psychoanalysis, neuroscience, linguistics, several didactics, sociology, and educational science. IDeA thus has become a multi-disciplinary joint venture conducting both comprehensive longitudinal studies and cross-sectional focused empirical studies.
