(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): This article addresses the issue of performance-appropriate marks for pupils in Austrian elementary schools at the end of fourth grade, based upon a multilevel analysis including the effect of the performance composition of classes on individual marks. The analyses were performed using data from the 2013 Learning Standards Assessment Mathematics 4 (N = 73,655) conducted by the Federal Institute for Educational Research, Innovation and Development of the Austrian School System (BIFIE). In addition to individual test performance and the performance composition of classes, gender, socio-economic status (SES), and the immigrant backgrounds of pupils were taken into account. Overall, logistic regressions reveal a relationship higher 0,60 between test performance and marks. This means that teachers were fairly successful in matching the performance rankings of primary school pupils with marks across classes and schools. However, the results also indicate the less-than-adequate evaluation of particularly low-performing and highperforming students. In addition, a positive deviation of marks compared to test performance was found for students from families with higher SES, and a negative deviation for students with immigrant backgrounds (within classes only). No systematic deviation of marks compared to test performance was found in relation to gender. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Teacher judgments in terms of grades, proficiency assessments, and recommending placement in ability groups can have important consequences for a child's future educational path. Whether or not students' sociodemographic background characteristics are systematically related to teacher judgments has been a controversial topic of discussion. Using data from the TIMSS-Transition Study (N = 3285 fourth graders) administered across 13 German federal states in the 2006-2007 school year and survey data from parents and teachers, we investigated whether or not the average classroom socioeconomic status is reflected in teacher judgments and also examined possible underlying processes. We also probed the role of teachers' own socioeconomic backgrounds (at the age of 16) in their later susceptibility to differentially judge students from different socioeconomic backgrounds and in differentially composed classrooms. Multilevel regression analyses revealed that, after controlling for differences in achievement (as indicated by standardized tests), teachers' judgments were associated with the classrooms' socioeconomic composition, and this finding could not be attributed to the average levels of motivation or behavior in the classroom. Teachers were similarly likely to exhibit such differential judgments regardless of their own socioeconomic background. These findings are discussed in the context of their implications for educational policy. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine disparities in important components of reading acquisition in the context of migration. Previous empirical studies showed significant differences in reading skills between students with and without immigrant backgrounds. Data of N = 712 students tested in grades 3, 4, and 6 were analyzed with respect to group differences in reading acquisition. The autoregressive cross-lag panel-model and the latent growth curve models revealed negative effects of immigrant background on the relative position of children in the domains text comprehension and vocabulary as well as a negative effect on relative changes in vocabulary and positive effects on relative changes in reading motivation. Social inequality could not fully explain the identified effects. Immigrant background did not predict absolute growth of text comprehension, vocabulary, and reading motivation. Implications of the findings for research and practice are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Several studies converge on the view that children with learning difficulties (LD) have a lower academic self-concept than children without LD. However, whether the influence of specific learning difficulties on academic self-concept is domain-specific or domain-general it is still at issue. Therefore, this longitudinal study examined the academic self-concept of 77 typically developing children and 236 children with specific learning difficulties in reading, spelling and/or mathematics. The children's self-concept in reading, spelling and mathematics was assessed at the beginning and the end of the children's last year in elementary school. The study revealed three important findings: First, in line with the domain-specific hypothesis, children with LD showed a lower self-perception of academic skills only in those domains in which they were low achieving. Second, children with specific learning difficulties in either reading or spelling exhibited a lower academic self-concept in both verbal domains, which suggests that they did not differentiate between their skills in reading and spelling. Last, children's self-concept in spelling and mathematics decreased significantly in the course of a school year. Overall, the children showed a sophisticated self-perception of their individual strengths and weaknesses at the end of primary school. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: This study tested whether the gender intensification hypothesis applies to relations between multiple domain-specific self-concept facets and self-esteem. This hypothesis predicts gender-stereotypic differences in these relations and assumes they intensify with age. Furthermore, knowledge about gender-related or age-related differences in self-concept-self-esteem relations might provide valuable knowledge for designing effective self-esteem enhancement interventions. We investigated grade and gender differences in the relations between domain-specific self-concept facets and self-esteem within a sample of 1958 German students in Grades 3 to 6. Results indicated no difference in the self-concept - self-esteem relations between the subsamples of third and fourth graders and fifth and sixth graders or between boys and girls. These relations also did not differ between boys and girls in the subsamples of third and fourth graders and fifth and sixth graders. These results suggest self-concept-self-esteem relations to be invariant across grade levels and gender and thus did not support the gender intensification hypothesis.

Abstract: The goals of this study were to explore the deficits in working memory associated with literacy disorders (i.e. developmental disorders of reading and/or spelling) and the developmental trajectories of these working memory deficits. The performance of 28 children with literacy disorders was compared to a non-disabled control group with the same group size at five bi-annual times of measurement in a three-year-longitudinal study beginning at the end of primary school (9.5 years of age). Storage capacity and central-executive working memory were assessed in phonological and visual-spatial modalities, the latter under static and dynamic conditions. Overall, children with literacy disorders were outperformed by their typical developing peers in all phonological and in dynamic visual-spatial storage and central-executive tasks except for the static visual-spatial storage task. Results at single times of measurement revealed that the most consistent deficit was found in the storage capacity of the phonological loop. An additional central-executive impairment is supported by low backward spans. The causes for output deficits in dynamic visual-spatial tasks and good performance under static visual-spatial condition are discussed.

Abstract: This chapter focuses on students' self-esteem in the context of the transition to secondary school in Germany which already takes place after grade 4 and might thus be detached from puberty. The transition to secondary school could affect the mean level of self-esteem as well as its relations to domain-specific facets of self-concept. These issues were examined by comparing German 4th grade and 5th grade students. To gain insights into possible rebound effects, students attending grades 5 and 6 were also compared. Two self-esteem measures were applied in order to test the generalizability of the findings. For both measures, 4th grade students were found to display higher self-esteem mean levels than 5th grade students implying a negative impact of an early transition. As 5th grade students revealed higher self-esteem mean levels than 6th grade students, self-esteem seems also to suffer from an ongoing decline during adolescence. With regard to the relations of self-esteem to domain-specific self-concept facets, the self-esteem of students after transition tended to be more loosely related to academic self-concept than the self-esteem of students before transition. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the findings and suggestions for further research. (DIPF/Orig.)
