Abstract (english): Chatbots are a promising technology with the potential to enhance workplaces and everyday life. In terms of scalability and accessibility, they also offer unique possibilities as communication and information tools for digital learning. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review investigating the areas of education where chatbots have already been applied, explore the pedagogical roles of chatbots, the use of chatbots for mentoring purposes, and their potential to personalize education. We conducted a preliminary analysis of 2678 publications to perform this literature review, which allowed us to identify 74 relevant publications for chatbots' application in education. Through this, we address five research questions that, together, allow us to explore the current state-of-the-art of this educational technology. We conclude our systematic review by pointing to three main research challenges: 1. Aligning chatbot evaluations with implementation objectives, 2. Exploring the potential of chatbots for mentoring students, and 3. Exploring and leveraging adaptation capabilities of chatbots. For all three challenges, we discuss opportunities for future research.

Abstract (english): In this article, we provide a comparative analysis of public education in Germany and the US, focusing on historical and contemporary challenges to education, Bildung, and citizenry in the modern nation state. In particular, we examine relations among nation building processes and education, transnational discourses, mutual influences, and relations regarding public education over time, and identity building and citizenship within and between federal, nation state and international levels. Comparative methods are utilized to examine policy documents as well as the literature, looking for similarities and differences among key concepts and discourses. The article concludes by pointing out that a number of contemporary developments bringing public education to a crossroads today are not entirely new and that foundations of education theory are still relevant. At the same time, we suggest new cross-national dialogues regarding the challenges bringing public education to the crossroads today. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Introduction. Systematic reviews are a method to synthesise research results for evidence-based decision-making on a specific question. Processes of information seeking and behaviour play a crucial role and might intensively influence the outcomes of a review. This paper proposes an approach to understand the relevance assessment and decision-making of researchers that conduct systematic reviews.
Method. A systematic review was conducted to build up a database for text-based qualitative analyses of researchers' decision-making in review processes.
Analysis. The analysis focuses on the selection process of retrieved articles and introduces the method to investigate relevance assessment processes of researchers.
Results. There are different methods to conduct reviews in research, and relevance assessment of documents within those processes is neither one-directional nor standardised. Research on information behaviour of researchers involved in those reviews has not looked at relevance assessment steps and their influence in a review's outcomes.
Conclusions. A reason for the varieties and inconsistencies of review types might be that information seeking and relevance assessment are much more complex and researchers might not be able to draw upon their concrete decisions. This paper proposes a research study to investigate researcher behaviour while synthesising research results for evidence-based decision-making.

Abstract (english): The chapter introduces the readers to the contents and rationales of this handbook. This Handbook focuses on the education systems on the American continents - North, Central, and South America - and includes chapters for most countries in this region, also the Caribbean. This introductory chapter first offers a conceptual discussion of central concepts that build the object of interest of the chapters, namely national education systems, and discusses their status and relevance for understanding education in the global era. By doing so, it sets the intellectual framework for the country chapters. By deliberating on the conceptual leverage of each term, it aims at both sharpening their analytical traction and pointing to their multifaceted nature - a crucial intellectual activity before any comparative exercise. It closes with a brief outline of the common structure that builds the backbone of the individual country chapters is then presented. This section briefly expounds the rationale of the different parts of the chapters, offering some justification for the organizational principles deployed, including their selective nature. In making these decisions transparent, the section also functions as a useful reading aid. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Education systems are shaped by the history of the nation they are intended to serve. This chapter discusses how education systems are constructed by either putting the nation center stage or rejecting such a construct all together. Rather than focusing solely on the system level or on the political level, this chapter also examines the individual level. The systems chosen as examples here are those of France and Canada, as these can be seen as opposed conceptions which exemplify how differently national identities can be constructed in the light of globalized and ongoing changes in citizenship.
