Abstract (english): Theoretical considerations (see Chaps. 5 to 19 of this volume) led to the development of a great amount of questionnaire material, which was localized to fit the contexts of more than 70 countries and economies, implemented in a study with about 120,000 students across these countries, and analyzed to yield indicators on how well questions functioned across and within countries. Such a study, and its results, depends on design and methodological considerations and on decisions made during preparation and implementation. This chapter summarizes decisions regarding the design and analysis procedures of the PISA 2015 field trial, and the resulting data that were used to develop the PISA 2015 main survey's context assessment. Furthermore, this chapter provides strategies and reasoning related to the choice of questionnaire material that was deemed to be suitable to assess learning contexts in different countries equally well.
Abstract (english): The present article addresses the question of how social origin affects access to higher education. The role of class-specific differences in school performance (primary effect) and cost-benefit considerations (secondary effect) are considered as well as the way in which changes in the institutional setup of the educational system may interact with social origin. The review shows that educational decisions at this later transition are mainly influenced by secondary effects. In particular, differences between social classes are explained by group-specific investment costs and expectations of the social context associated with continuing higher education. Although expansion of institutional pathways in upper secondary education has reduced social inequality in acquiring higher education entrance qualifications, secondary effects at the transition to university have been found to increase over time. Thus, within younger cohorts, high-school graduates with lower social status are more often diverted from higher education at universities by attractive vocational or nonuniversity pathways. The article discusses approaches to reduce secondary effects of social origin.

Abstract: Higher cognitive functions, such as human perceptual decision making, require information processing and transmission across widespread cortical networks. Temporally synchronized neural firing patterns are advantageous for efficiently representing and transmitting information within and between assemblies. Computational, empirical, and conceptual considerations all lead to the expectation that the informational redundancy of neural firing rates is positively related to their synchronization. Recent theorizing and initial evidence also suggest that the coding of stimulus characteristics and their integration with behavioral goal states require neural interactions across a hierarchy of timescales. However, most studies thus have focused on neural activity in a single frequency range or on a restricted set of brain regions. Here we provide evidence for cooperative spatiotemporal dynamics of slow and fast EEGsignals during perceptual decision making at the single-trial level. Participants performed three masked two-choice decision tasks, one each with numerical, verbal, or figural content. Decrements in posterior power (8 -14 Hz) were paralleled by increments in high-frequency (>30 Hz) signal entropy in trials demanding active sensory processing. Simultaneously, frontocentral power (4 -7 Hz) increased, indicating evidence integration. The coordinated a/0 dynamics were tightly linked to decision speed and remarkably similar across tasks, suggesting a domain-general mechanism. In sum, we demonstrate an inverse association between decision-related changes in widespread low-frequency power and local high-frequency entropy. The cooperation among mechanisms captured by these changes enhances the informational density of neural response patterns and qualifies as a neural coding system in the service of perceptual decision making.

Abstract: Dealing with socio-scientific issues in science classes enables students to participate productively in controversial discussions concerning ethical topics, such as sustainable development. In this respect, well-structured decision-making processes are essential for elaborate reasoning. To foster decision-making competence, a computer-based programme was developed that trains secondary school students (grades 11-13) in decision-making strategies. The main research question is: does training students to use these strategies foster decision-making competence? In addition, the influence of meta-decision aids was examined. Students conducted a task analysis to select an appropriate strategy prior to the decision-making process. Hence, the second research question is: does combining decision-making training with a task analysis enhance decision-making competence at a higher rate? To answer these questions, 386 students were tested in a pre-post-follow-up control-group design that included two training groups (decision-making strategies/decision-making strategies combined with a task analysis) and a control group (decision-making with additional ecological information instead of strategic training). An open-ended questionnaire was used to assess decision-making competence in situations related to sustainable development. The decision-making training led to a significant improvement in the post-test and the follow-up, which was administered three months after the training. Long-term effects on the quality of the students' decisions were evident for both training groups. Gains in competence when reflecting upon the decision-making processes of others were found, to a lesser extent, in the training group that received the additional meta-decision training. In conclusion, training in decision-making strategies is a promising approach to deal with socio-scientific issues related to sustainable development.

Abstract (english): A child's ability to continuously pay attention to a cognitive task is often challenged by distracting
events. Distraction is especially detrimental in a learning or classroom environment in which
attended information is typically associated with establishing skills and knowledge. Here we report a
study examining the effect of emotional distractors on performance in a subsequent visual lexical
decision task in 11- to 13-year-old students (n30). Lexical decisions about neutral verbs and verblike
pseudowords (i.e., targets) were analysed as a function of the preceding distractor type (pleasant,
neutral, or unpleasant photos) and the picturetarget stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA; 200 or 600
ms). Across distractor categories, emotionally arousing pictures prolonged decisions about word
targets when compared to neutral pictures, irrespective of the SOA. The present results demonstrate
that similar to adults, early adolescent students exhibit sustained susceptibility to cognitive
interference by irrelevant emotional events.

Abstract: We introduce a computational model of the negative priming (NP) effect that includes perception, memory, attention, decision making, and action. The model is designed to provide a coherent picture across competing theories of NP. The model is formulated in terms of abstract dynamics for the activations of features, their binding into object entities, their semantic categorization as well as related memories and appropriate reactions. The dynamic variables interact in a connectionist network which is shown to be adaptable to a variety of experimental paradigms. We find that selective attention can be modeled by means of inhibitory processes and by a threshold dynamics. From the necessity of quantifying the experimental paradigms, we conclude that the specificity of the experimental paradigm must be taken into account when predicting the nature of the NP effect.

Abstract: Perceptual decision-making performance depends on several
cognitive and neural processes. Here, we fit Ratcliff s diffusion
model to accuracy data and reaction-time distributions from
one numerical and one verbal two-choice perceptual-decision
task to deconstruct these performance measures into the rate
of evidence accumulation (i.e., drift rate), response criterion setting
(i.e., boundary separation), and peripheral aspects of performance
(i.e., nondecision time). These theoretical processes
are then related to individual differences in brain activation by
means of multiple regression. The sample consisted of 24 younger
and 15 older adults performing the task in fMRI before and after
100 daily 1-hr behavioral training sessions in a multitude of
cognitive tasks. Results showed that individual differences in
boundary separation were related to striatal activity, whereas differences
in drift rate were related to activity in the inferior parietal
lobe. These associations were not significantly modified by
adult age or perceptual expertise. We conclude that the striatum
is involved in regulating response thresholds, whereas the inferior
parietal lobe might represent decision-making evidence
related to letters and numbers.

Abstract (english): A number of educational and political expectations have been linked with the expansion
of the all-day schools. Counted among these, the hope that the students will be supported
in their individual development is of particular interest. Available research results show that this
support can definitely succeed, though only under certain conditions. Among other things, there
must be a continuous and intensive utilisation of the all-day activities. But meeting precisely this
condition is a problem at the moment. The utilisation of all-day activities is no ordinary component
of the school history, not least because of the existing limits on the possibilities for creativity
and decision-making. For this reason, the present report will pursue the question as to which
conditions contribute to a continuous and consistent participation in a school s all-day activities.
