Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In the field of education, transatlantic discourse has been shaped by an exchange of ideas for a long time. Over the past two decades, education science has increasingly become internationally networked. Since 2015, the Office for International Cooperation in Education at DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education has organized international sessions on education research at the Annual Meetings of the American Educational Research Association, thus providing a floor for transatlantic exchange on current research topics. The volume gives an overview of the transatlantic activities in education research with regard to these sessions. It represents a collection of topics ranging from school development to the use of large-scale assessment and digital data in education to questions related to migration and public education, or the economization of education. Moreover, the volume offers a reflection on the gains respectively obstacles linked to international exchange.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This study built on expectancy-value theory and examined intrinsic value and attainment value related to math, German, and general studies with elementary school students. The research questions addressed the differentiation between the two value facets, their developmental trajectory at the end of elementary school, gender effects, and their relations to school grades. The variables were assessed with N = 2.317 students at three measurement waves during grade levels three and four. Students were found to differentiate between the two value facets in all three domains. However, intrinsic value and attainment value were highly correlated in general studies. The differentiation between the two value facets did not change across time. Latent growth models showed decreasing mean levels of math intrinsic value, but increasing mean levels of attainment values in German and general studies. Yet, the effect sizes for these changes were small indicating that domain-specific value facets are rather stable at the end of elementary school. Boys and girls did not differ in the structure of domain-specific value facets, but displayed different mean levels. Boys showed higher means on intrinsic value and attainment value in math; girls displayed higher means on both value facets in German. Boys and girls did not differ in the mean levels of attainment value in general studies, but boys reported higher mean levels on intrinsic value in general studies at two waves. In all three domains, intrinsic value and attainment value showed similar positive relations to domain-specific school grades. Across time, former school grades were positively related to later intrinsic value and to later attainment value in all three domains. In math, former attainment value also showed positive relations to later school grades. The findings are linked to results obtained with secondary school students and discussed against the background of the transition from elementary school to secondary school. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Generative learning strategies are intended to improve students' learning by prompting them to actively make sense of the material to be learned. But are they effective for all students? This review provides an overview of six popular generative learning strategies: concept mapping, explaining, predicting, questioning, testing, and drawing. Its main purpose is to review for what ages the effectiveness of these strategies has been demonstrated and whether there are indications of age-related differences in their effectiveness. The description of each strategy covers (1) how it is supposed to work, (2) the evidence on its effectiveness in different age groups, and (3) if there are age-related differences in its effectiveness. It is found that while all six generative learning strategies reviewed have proven effective for university students, evidence is mixed for younger students. Whereas some strategies (practice testing, predicting) seem to be effective already in lower-elementary-school children, others (drawing, questioning) seem to be largely ineffective until secondary school. The review closes with a call for research on the cognitive and metacognitive prerequisites of generative learning that can explain these differences.

Abstract:
Research shows that various contextual factors can have an impact on learning. Some of these factors can originate from the physical learning environment (PLE) in this regard. When learning from home, learners have to organize their PLE by themselves. This paper is concerned with identifying, measuring, and collecting factors from the PLE that may affect learning using mobile sensing. More specifically, this paper first investigates which factors from the PLE can affect distance learning. The results identify nine types of factors from the PLE associated with cognitive, physiological, and affective effects on learning. Subsequently, this paper examines which instruments can be used to measure the investigated factors. The results highlight several methods involving smart wearables (SWs) to measure these factors from PLEs successfully. Third, this paper explores how software infrastructure can be designed to measure, collect, and process the identified multimodal data from and about the PLE by utilizing mobile sensing. The design and implementation of the Edutex software infrastructure described in this paper will enable learning analytics stakeholders to use data from and about the learners' physical contexts. Edutex achieves this by utilizing sensor data from smartphones and smartwatches, in addition to response data from experience samples and questionnaires from learners' smartwatches. Finally, this paper evaluates to what extent the developed infrastructure can provide relevant information about the learning context in a field study with 10 participants. The evaluation demonstrates how the software infrastructure can contextualize multimodal sensor data, such as lighting, ambient noise, and location, with user responses in a reliable, efficient, and protected manner.

Abstract (english):
This paper addresses the development of performance-based assessment items for ICT skills, skills in dealing with information and communication technologies, a construct which is rather broadly and only operationally defined. Item development followed a construct-driven approach to ensure that test scores could be interpreted as intended. Specifically, ICT-specific knowledge as well as problem-solving and the comprehension of text and graphics were defined as components of ICT skills and cognitive ICT tasks (i.e., accessing, managing, integrating, evaluating, creating). In order to capture the construct in a valid way, design principles for constructing the simulation environment and response format were formulated. To empirically evaluate the very heterogeneous items and detect malfunctioning items, item difficulties were analyzed and behavior-related indicators with item-specific thresholds were developed and applied. The 69 item's difficulty scores from the Rasch model fell within a comparable range for each cognitive task. Process indicators addressing time use and test-taker interactions were used to analyze whether most test-takers executed the intended processes, exhibited disengagement, or got lost among the items. Most items were capable of eliciting the intended behavior; for the few exceptions, conclusions for item revisions were drawn. The results affirm the utility of the proposed framework for developing and implementing performance-based items to assess ICT skills. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In this study, we present a survey measure to assess teacher collaboration. Based on existing research, we distinguish two forms (exchange/low cost and co-construction/high cost) as well as two themes of collaboration (school-related and instructional improvement). In a sample of 773 teachers from 16 high schools from several German federal states, we investigate the structure of the new measure by confirmatory factor analyses. These analyses reveal that a model which simulta- neously considers forms and themes of teacher collaboration fits best to the data. Teacher collaboration thus can be described best as a multidimensional construct. In line with previous research, descriptive analyses suggest that high cost activities regarding teachers' instructional practices happen less frequently than low cost instruction-related collaboration. Concerning school development collaboration, dif- ferences between the two forms seem to be smaller. These findings imply that teacher collaboration can be assessed as being situated in specific themes for collaborative practices with regard to instruction and school improvement.

Abstract (english):
From age 5 to 7, there are remarkable improvements in children's cognitive abilities ("5-7 shift"). In many countries, including Germany, formal schooling begins in this age range. It is, thus, unclear to what extent exposure to formal schooling contributes to the "5-7 shift." In this longitudinal study, we investigated if schooling acts as a catalyst of maturation. We tested 5-year-old children who were born close to the official cutoff date for school entry and who were still attending a play-oriented kindergarten. One year later, the children were tested again. Some of the children had experienced their first year of schooling whereas the others had remained in kindergarten. Using 2 functional magnetic resonance imaging tasks that assessed episodic memory formation (i.e., subsequent memory effect), we found that children relied strongly on the medial temporal lobe (MTL) at both time points but not on the prefrontal cortex (PFC). In contrast, older children and adults typically show subsequent memory effects in both MTL and PFC. Both children groups improved in their memory performance, but there were no longitudinal changes nor group differences in neural activation. We conclude that successful memory formation in this age group relies more heavily on the MTL than in older age groups. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Point-based geometry representations have become widely used in numerous contexts, ranging from particle-based simulations, over stereo image matching, to depth sensing via light detection and ranging. Our application focus is on the reconstruction of curved line structures in noisy 3D point cloud data. Respective algorithms operating on such point clouds often rely on the notion of a local neighborhood. Regarding the latter, our approach employs multi-scale neighborhoods, for which weighted covariance measures of local points are determined. Curved line structures are reconstructed via vector field tracing, using a bidirectional piecewise streamline integration. We also introduce an automatic selection of optimal starting points via multi-scale geometric measures. The pipeline development and choice of parameters was driven by an extensive, automated initial analysis process on over a million prototype test cases. The behavior of our approach is controlled by several parameters - the majority being set automatically, leaving only three to be controlled by a user. In an extensive, automated final evaluation, we cover over one hundred thousand parameter sets, including 3D test geometries with varying curvature, sharp corners, intersections, data holes, and systematically applied varying types of noise. Further, we analyzed different choices for the point of reference in the co-variance computation; using a weighted mean performed best in most cases. In addition, we compared our method to current, publicly available line reconstruction frameworks. Up to thirty times faster execution times were achieved in some cases, at comparable error measures. Finally, we also demonstrate an exemplary application on four real-world 3D light detection and ranging datasets, extracting power line cables.
