Abstract (english): The results of the PISA study have also shown that a regular update of our knowledge on the development of school systems in other European countries is absolutely necessary to internationally integrate work and decisions in educational policy and administration, practice and research, and to keep up with the rapid international reform developments. For the first time, this volume presents a current analysis which comprises a presentation of the school systems of all 47 politically sovereign European countries, from Iceland to Georgia, from Norway to Malta. A common structure of the country contributions based on the same leading question formulation permits comparative homogeneous levels of analysis and similar investigation dimensions. The broad term 'Europe' is not only limited to the core countries of Europe, but also represents the development on the peripheries where countries like Turkey or the Balkan republics not least through school performances are forcing their way back to Europe. The volume not only makes common lines of development of European school systems clear, but also provides initial indicators about the reasons for the success or failure of the school systems of countries participating in international school performance tests (PISA, TIMSS a.o.)
