Educational Quality and Evaluation

The Department of Educational Quality and Evaluation (BiQua) focuses on the investigation of quality and effectiveness of educational processes.

About

In its research and service activities, the department of Educational Quality and Evaluation deals with the quality and effectiveness of educational processes in teaching and schooling. It particularly focuses on conceptual description and measurement of academic achievement, competencies and personality traits relevant in the context of educational effectiveness. Research and services are organised in two core themes: (1) Research on Teaching and Schooling and (2) Educational and Psychological Assessment. This includes three research units, which are led by research professorships.

Within the core theme Research on Teaching and Schooling (including the research unit Adaptive Education and Migration) researchers from the department investigate educational effectiveness with surveys, videos and quasi-experimental interventions. The array of constructs covered includes subject-specific content as well as opportunities to learn, practices, and qualities of instruction, e. g. classroom management. The interaction of the teaching components (provision) with individual learning activities (use) is assessed with regard to achieved learning outcomes. Intercultural and historical comparisons serve to identify basic patterns of successful teaching, and it is thus possible to elaborate fundamental aspects of teaching and schooling such as dealing with heterogeneity.

In the context of the core theme Educational and Psychological Assessment (research units Educational Measurement and Technology-Based Assessment and Instruction), researchers of the department are engaged in the theoretical description, measurement, and statistical modeling of academic achievement, competencies, and dispositions.

Both core themes are involved in international large scale assessments such as PISA and the TALIS Video Study for Germany. At a national level, they participate in the Centre for International Student Assessment (ZIB) and the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS).

Department Units

Adaptive Education and Migration

Researchers of this research unit explore ways to support monolingual and multilingual children in heterogeneous classrooms. Among other things, research is being carried out into ways of promoting reading and arithmetic in primary schools, making use of cooperative forms of learning (peer learning and small group work). The focus is on questions regarding the usability of multilingual interactions for teaching and learning processes.

Educational Measurement

Researchers of the research unit Educational Measurement address the question how theoretical models of educational constructs and effects of learning opportunities on their acquisition can be incorporated into psychometric models.

Technology-Based Assessment and Instruction

The research and service unit Technology-Based Assessment and Instruction deals with the development and empirical evaluation of technology-based measurement methods (e.g., new item formats, test administration effects, response processes, automated scoring). The research unit is part of the cross-departmental TBA Centre developing innovations in the field of technology-based assessment.
